Carpal tunnel syndrome happens when the band of fibrous tissue in the wrist joint compresses and irritates the median nerve that passes through it. Swelling or changes in the position of surrounding tissues may produce such compression. This leads to symptoms such as tingling sensation and numbness of the thumb, index, and middle fingers.
