Big moms, big babies

Here is an important reason why prenatal check ups to a health professional is vital during pregnancy. In a large scale study in the US involving more than half a million pregnant women between 1989 and 2003, researchers found that pregnant women who gained more than 24 kilos are predisposed to giving birth to babies who weigh more than 150 grams compared to women whose weight gain was 22 kilos or less.

We know the maternal complications of heart disease and metabolic problems--diabetes--when one is on the heavy side. On the other hand, the fetal effects could mean increased birth weight, and the possibility of diabetes later on in life. The chances of cesarean delivery is high with big babies.
