Condoms just for gays?

Below is an interesting development to curb the transmission of infections by sexual means--condoms that are specially made for anal penetration. This Indian idea will soon introduce condoms with copious amounts of lubricant for easier use for the behind. And that, of course, will help prevent anal cracks, which is a known risk factor in the transmission of HIV virus. This could be a next important thing to consider if abstinence were not chosen. Read the article below for details.

Acetaminophen causes allergies?

Initial studies in the US showed that there could be an association between the commonly-used pain killer, acetaminophen, and triggering asthmatic attacks. About 40% of children have had asthmatic wheezes years after taking the drug. Other findings included the development of eczema and allergic rhinitis. Until such association were fully established, experts do not advice staying away from the popular drug. Read more below.

Junk foods: Truth in advertising?

Television junk food advertisements may soon find lesser air time on British TV after protests banning them before 21:00 everyday. About 83% of the 2,000 people surveyed said that it becomes hard to encourage children to stay away from junk foods because of such adverts.

I think those who advocate the cause should also look on other media such as in print or radios or movies. Parents should also be educated as well on how to entice children to prefer healthier foods. Further details below, please.

Underarm wetness

Big moms, big babies

Here is an important reason why prenatal check ups to a health professional is vital during pregnancy. In a large scale study in the US involving more than half a million pregnant women between 1989 and 2003, researchers found that pregnant women who gained more than 24 kilos are predisposed to giving birth to babies who weigh more than 150 grams compared to women whose weight gain was 22 kilos or less.

We know the maternal complications of heart disease and metabolic problems--diabetes--when one is on the heavy side. On the other hand, the fetal effects could mean increased birth weight, and the possibility of diabetes later on in life. The chances of cesarean delivery is high with big babies.

In my opinion, faithful compliance to see your doctor and following their advices may help reduce the risk of in bundling up your weight. Read more below.

Normal pelvic ultrasound findings

Tanong: good day doc,
nagpacheck up po ako sa OB gyn last 2 weeks ago. and i made a papsmear test and transvaginal ultrasound. i wanted to have a baby, kaya nilakasan ko na loob ko na magpacheck up. ung result ng ultrasound ko po ay:
the uterus is anteverted, midline, normal in size
measuring 54mm x 28mm x 27mm with smooth outline and a thinned out
endometrial stripe measuring 8mm
Homogenous myometrial echopattern seen.
the cervix is closed. (22mm x 18mm).
Both ovaries are seen, RT: 21mm x 21mm- with follicles noted
within- the largest seen having a 12mm AP diameter.
the left ovary measures 25mm x 16mm with subcapsular cysts noted with echogenic struma.
Cul de sac is fluid free.

VIDEO: Ankle sprain massage

The ankle joint, the part of the lower extremities that connects the foot with the lower leg, is frequently injured. An abnormal twisting motion can happen when the foot is planted awkwardly, when the ground is uneven, or when an unusual amount of force is applied to the joint. Ankle sprains are common sports injuries but can also happen during everyday activities such as walking or even getting out of bed. Watch the 2:20 long video below.

VIDEO: Massage for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal tunnel syndrome happens when the band of fibrous tissue in the wrist joint compresses and irritates the median nerve that passes through it. Swelling or changes in the position of surrounding tissues may produce such compression. This leads to symptoms such as tingling sensation and numbness of the thumb, index, and middle fingers. Watch the 1:23 long video that follows.

VIDEO: Are you giving the right dose of medicine to your child?

Children may not get well if the right kind of medicine were given less. Likewise, side effects of the drug may happen if more of what is required were administered. Parents should know how to correctly give the right dose to their children in order to give the maximum benefit and lessen the adverse reactions of the medication they give to children. Don't be shy to ask health professionals. Watch the 1:21 long video below.

PARENT ERRORS IN MEASURING CHILDREN'S DOSES

Uploaded and shared in Youtube by: USFoodandDrugAdmin — The Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) recently reported on a study of the errors parents make when measuring children's doses of oral medications. In the study, 300 parents were observed as they attempted to measure liquid doses using dosing cups, droppers, dosing spoons and oral syringes. Parents using dosing cups made many more errors than those using the other methods. The cups were also associated with large dosing errors, where the measured dose differed from the prescribed dose by more than 40 percent. Parents with low health literacy scores were more likely to make errors. The authors of the study speculate that the higher failure rate with the dosing cups might be due to legibility difficulties, or to parents assuming that a full cup is the unit of measure, or to confusion between teaspoon "tsp" and tablespoon "tbsp" markings, especially with the abbreviations for teaspoon and tablespoon. When using the dosing cups, parents should always verify the dose at eye level. But whichever dosing device you provide for your patients, ISMP recommends using the "teachback method." That is where the parent or caregiver demonstrates they understand how to use the device before it's dispensed.
